The International Council of Museums \u2013 <\/span>ICOM expresses deep concern over the protection of museums and cultural heritage<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

ICOM <\/span>expresses its <\/span>serious c<\/span>onc<\/span>ern<\/span> over<\/span> the <\/span>recent<\/span> conflict<\/span> in<\/span> Iran, the Gulf Region and the Eastern Mediterranean<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> its<\/span> humanitarian impact<\/span>,<\/span> as well as the<\/span> risks <\/span>facing <\/span><\/span>museums<\/span> and<\/span> cultural heritage sites.<\/span> We are alarmed by reports of <\/span>serious damage<\/span> to cultural sites in the region,<\/span> confirmed by <\/span>intergovernmental organisations such as<\/span><\/span> UNESCO<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ICOM is closely <\/span>monitoring<\/span> the situation in coordination with its National Committees and partners in the region<\/span> and <\/span>internationally<\/span>, <\/span>in line with its <\/span>core <\/span>commitment to<\/span> the protection of cultur<\/span>al<\/span> heritage.<\/span> We<\/span> remain<\/span> attentive to the safety and well-being of <\/span>our<\/span> members<\/span> in the affected areas<\/span> as well as all<\/span> professionals working to safeguard cultural heritage<\/span>.<\/span> ICOM underlines the need to respect international humanitarian law and to <\/span>e<\/span>nsure<\/span> the protection of civilians.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ICOM <\/span>calls upon<\/span> all parties to respect <\/span>their obligations under <\/span>the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property <\/span>in the Event of<\/span> Armed Conflict and its Protocol<\/span>s<\/span> and<\/span> reiterates its call to<\/span> all parties to<\/span><\/span> comply with<\/span> their international legal obligations to safeguard cultural heritage<\/span>.<\/span> ICOM<\/span> supports statements already published by partner organisations and <\/span>refers to the<\/span><\/span> ICOM Statement for <\/span>P<\/span>eace,<\/span> <\/span><\/a>and the <\/span><\/span>Declaration on the protection of archives, libraries, museums and heritage places during armed conflicts and political instability.<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The destruction of heritage is not only a local tragedy<\/span>;<\/span> it is a loss <\/span>for<\/span> all humankind. <\/span>We must <\/span>come <\/span>t<\/span>ogether<\/span>, through dialogue, cooperation, and respect to preserve the cultural bridges that connect our shared past to a more peaceful future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
